Setting up a 3-way junction traffic light involves considering traffic flow, safety, and efficiency. Here are the steps to set up a T-intersection signal light:
(1) Signal Phasing and Timing
- Traffic Study: Conduct a traffic study to understand the traffic volume, peak hours, pedestrian movement, and accident history.
- Design Criteria: Follow design guidelines from relevant authorities.
- Intersection Layout: Ensure the layout accommodates the signal poles, pedestrian crossings, and vehicle lanes.
- Phasing: Determine the phases needed. Typically, a T-intersection might have: Main street through movements (both directions),Side street left turn and through movement (if applicable),Pedestrian phase.
(2) Normial setting.
West direction, and left and right arrows in the south-to-north direction. All right arrows can be set to evergreen, and of course, red lights can be set in special circumstances. Each pole can be added with a multi- phase countdown to prompt travel.
(3) Hardware Installation
- Signal Poles: Install signal poles at appropriate locations to ensure visibility for all approaching vehicles.
- Signal Heads: Mount signal heads on the poles. Ensure they are aligned correctly for visibility.
- Pedestrian Signals: Install pedestrian signals and push buttons at crosswalks.
