U-Turn and Traffic Lights: Do You Need to Obey Them?
Many drivers miss their intended turns due to carelessness or other reasons. When this happens, most choose to make a U-turn to correct their route.However, making a U-turn is not as simple as turning the steering wheel. It requires considering actual road conditions carefully.
A common dilemma for drivers is whether to follow traffic lights when making a U-turn. The key rule depends on whether you need to cross the stop line.Traffic regulations state that you can make a U-turn at a red light if the center line near the intersection is dotted. It is also allowed if the median has a dedicated U-turn lane.Below are key points to note when making a U-turn:
1. Intersections with Dedicated U-Turn Lights
At any intersection with dedicated U-turn lights or ground markings, follow these instructions strictly.
Dedicated U-turn signs are usually on the far left. Occasionally, they may be placed on the right, though this is rare.
2. Intersections with Left-Turn Lights but No U-Turn Lights
Without “No U-Turn” signs or dedicated U-turn lights, you can make a U-turn anytime safely.
Ensure you do not interfere with other vehicles or compromise road safety. The median often changes from solid to dotted near intersections.
You can make a U-turn in this dotted median area without violating regulations.
3. Yellow Grid Areas
Yellow grid areas prohibit stopping at all times. If the light turns red ahead, keep your vehicle clear of this zone.
Nevertheless, U-turns are allowed here. You can make a U-turn as long as there is no guardrail in the center.
4. Zebra Crossing Areas
Some roads have zebra crossings, which often lack “No U-Turn” signs. Even so, zebra crossings are equivalent to sidewalks.
U-turns are strictly forbidden in zebra crossing areas to protect pedestrians.
5. No “No U-Turn” Signs = U-Turn Allowed
When approaching an intersection, you can make a U-turn without “No Left Turn” or “No U-Turn” signs.
In such cases, you do not need to watch traffic light changes. However, follow signs marked “Left Turn on Green” or “U-Turn on Red.”
These signs mean your U-turn must obey traffic light signals strictly.
