There are several types of traffic signals, including command light signals, crosswalk light signals, traffic baton signals, and hand gesture signals. 1. Command Light Signals
- Green Light: When the green light is on, vehicles and pedestrians are permitted to proceed. However, turning vehicles must not obstruct the passage of straight – moving vehicles and released pedestrians.
- Yellow Light: When the yellow light is on, it generally prohibits vehicles and pedestrians from moving. But vehicles that have already crossed the stop line and pedestrians who have entered the crosswalk can continue. Right – turning vehicles and straight – moving vehicles at a T – intersection without a right – hand crosswalk can proceed without impeding the released vehicles and pedestrians.
- Red Light: When the red light is on, it prohibits vehicles and pedestrians from moving. Vehicles should stop outside the stop line. Right – turning vehicles and straight – moving vehicles at a T – intersection without a right – hand crosswalk can move if they do not hinder the released vehicles and pedestrians.
- Green Arrow Light: When the green arrow light is on, it allows vehicles to move in the direction indicated by the arrow.
- Flashing Yellow Light: When the yellow light is flashing, vehicles and pedestrians should proceed under the principle of ensuring safety.
2. Lane Light Signals

Lane light signals, consisting of a green arrow and a red cross – shaped light, work as follows. A green arrow light permits vehicles in this lane to pass, while a red cross – shaped light prohibits vehicles in this lane from passing.
3. Crosswalk Light Signals
Crosswalk light signals include a green light, a flashing green light, and a red light. When the green light of the traffic signal is on, pedestrians are allowed to cross the crosswalk. A flashing green light prohibits pedestrians from entering the crosswalk. A red light bans pedestrians from entering the crosswalk.

4. Traffic Baton Signals
When a traffic police officer holds the baton and gives a stop signal, it stops vehicles from moving. Vehicles that have already crossed the stop line can continue. When the traffic police officer gives a straight – moving signal, it allows vehicles to move straight. Right – turning vehicles can move without obstructing the released vehicles. When the traffic police officer gives a left – turning signal, it permits left – turning vehicles and straight – moving vehicles to move. Right – turning vehicles from all directions and straight – moving vehicles at a T – intersection without a right – hand crosswalk can move without impeding the released vehicles.
5. Hand Gesture Signals
Hand gesture signals, divided into straight – moving, left – turning, and stop signals, are important in traffic control. When vehicles and pedestrians encounter a situation where the light signals, traffic signs, or traffic markings are inconsistent with the traffic police’s command, the traffic police’s instructions should be followed.
